You can customize the interface, including by detaching panels, and Serif has now added the ability to save custom layouts, as you can in Adobe Photoshop.Ĭtrl-mouse wheel lets you zoom, and double-clicking switches you back to Fit view. A simple reset option under the main View or Window menu would be preferable. I finally discovered a reset option in the Window > Studio menu, but all the original tools didn't reappear. I had a hard time resetting the interface to the default appearance after removing some panels. Panorama is another Persona, but it's only visible when you're stitching multiple images. The default Personas are Photo, Liquefy, Develop (for working with raw camera files), Tone Mapping, and Export. As with Photoshop, the interface shows a toolbar across the left and an info panel to the right for things like Layers, Histogram, Swatches, Adjustment, Transform-25 modules in all, any of which you can undock.Ībove the main image view are buttons for five Personas, or what other programs call modes or workspaces. The interface uses the industry standard dark gray theme, but its many colorful icons are less understated than most of the photo editing apps of today. ![]() You do get a generous selection of sizes, though not fleshed-out content templates like those Photoshop and CyberLink PhotoDirector offer to get you started creating your image. Serif doesn't include an automated tour of the interface like those offered by competing photo apps, including Corel PaintShop Pro, Lightroom, and Skylum Luminar. From there you can also get overlay packs such as Fog, Snow, and Rainbow effects by registering your product.Ī New Document link opens a dialog box where you set image properties like size and type. When you first run the program, you see a Welcome panel that offers sample images, tutorials, and links to Twitter and Facebook content. By comparison, Lightroom Classic and Photoshop (both PCMag Editors' Choice winners) each take up 2GB. Affinity Photo takes up 1.3GB of disk space after installation on my test PC. Making desktop software available via app stores, as Serif has done with Affinity, simplifies the installation and update process across multiple computers. It used to be 90 days, but that was before Adobe reduced its free Creative Cloud trial to seven days. Serif Photo offers a 30-day free trial for the price of an email address you must confirm. There’s no discount pricing for upgrades, but you can install the software on as many computers as you have, whereas Adobe limits Creative Cloud (such as Lightroom and Photoshop) applications to two computers. ![]() How Much Does Affinity Photo Cost and Where Can You Get It?Īffinity Photo is available on the Mac App Store, from the Microsoft Store in Windows, and as a website download, for a one-time price of $69.99 (discounted to $52.99 at the time of writing). ![]() The program is powerful and packed with features, but some operations are slow, and the interface lacks the friendliness and state-of-the-art tools found in Adobe Photoshop, our Editors' Choice winner for image editing applications. Version 2 of Affinity Photo adds nondestructive raw editing, more masking options, mesh warp, layer-state saves, and JPEG XL support. One factor in Serif’s favor is the low, one-time price for its photo editing software.

News reports from around the world confirm the pattern of general decline (see compiled Associated Press article by Danzio et al. A project organized by Shayegh and Malpede ( 2020) is gathering daily crime reports in major European cities, however, these findings are not yet published. Dodd ( 2020) reported major declines in the UK, while Dutch news reported a 46% drop in burglary, 43% decline in bike thefts, and a 74% drop in pickpocketing (Dutch News 2020). News reports from other developed nations also indicate major declines. These news reports are not by any means limited to the United States. Detroit crime statistics in the shadow of the pandemic have been limited, however a New York Times article (Eligon and MacFarquhar 2020) related that arrests from March 24 to April 14, 2020, were half as numerous as in the same period of 2019. However, burglary data indicated declines for Austin, Los Angeles, Memphis, and San Francisco, but not for Boston or Louisville. Full analysis was not complete for all of these cities. Ashby ( 2020) gathered data from eight large cities in the United States: Austin, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Louisville, Memphis, Nashville, and Los Angeles. The largest academic compilation on American cities comes from a British source. That study also found a 50% crime decline in Oakland, California. Declines were plotted day by day for the first 3 months of 2020, showing dramatic downturns in crime during the month of March, including thefts, weapons possession, homicide, domestic violence, traffic and sidewalk crimes, and (to a lesser degree) sex offenses. A multivariate analysis of crime changes in San Francisco (Shayegh and Malpede 2020) found a 43% decline in San Francisco neighborhoods. ![]() Several specific index crimes declined notably in these cities. An academic compilation by McDonald and Balkin ( 2020) of crime in five major North American cities added evidence of major crime declines in Chicago, San Francisco and Philadelphia. ![]() ![]() However, they did not observe significant declines for stolen vehicles, burglaries, assault with a deadly weapon, or intimate partner violence. ( 2020) adds to the evidence of a major overall crime drop in Los Angeles, especially for robbery, shoplifting, theft, and battery. Indications of dramatic declines in crime in the United States emerged in news reports about New York (Jacobs and Barrett 2020), Los Angeles (Poston 2020) and St. Before doing so, we review available evidence from other cities. The empirical task of the current research is to compare burglary changes in different zones of Detroit in response to the pandemic changes in routine activities. However, news reports were supplemented by compilations and a few academic articles or drafts. These reports derived mostly from police data, as reported in news sources. Supplementary evidence soon indicated that some types of crime were increasing in major ways, in contrast to the general reduction. Soon after these routine activities changed, a variety of evidence began to emerge indicating dramatic decreases in crime (reviewed below). The Covid-19 epidemic shifted routine activities by moving owners and customers away from business locations, leaving them highly vulnerable to burglary and trespassing. For example, when youths are located near businesses whose owners and customers are absent, those businesses become excellent targets for crime. Crime is most likely to occur when likely offenders converge in space and time with suitable crime targets in the absence of capable guardians against crime. Routine activity theory tells us that crime can be interpreted in terms of exposure to risk. Non-essential businesses were closed, and many other businesses experienced substantial declines in the number of customers, while forced to deal with remaining customers on a reduced-contact basis. These policies led to quick transformations in routine activities, with many people staying at home, children out of school, and entertainment districts emptied. In response to this pandemic, a range of containment policies have emerged in many nations (Wilder-Smith and Freedman 2020). Although the Chinese government did not respond immediately, they soon imposed a massive lockdown policy to limit the spread of the virus (Fang et al. The outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic began in China in late 2019 (Chen and Li 2020), then spread to the United States and other nations (Holshue et al. Mesh routers grow in size the more functionality you add in. The Deco X20 and Eero 6 are the only three-pack, dual-band routers in this lineup. It’s a little more than five inches taller than the Eero, but you get an extra ethernet port on each node to connect devices around your house. The TP-Link Deco X20 is the most agreeable in form and function, offering a small enough footprint that it doesn’t overpower a bookshelf. You want to reduce latency if you’re playing online co-op or streaming high-resolution video. High-end gaming consoles, laptops, computers, and set-top boxes can only connect wirelessly - a significant limitation if you’re like me and paying for gigabit speeds. It’s great for folks who want to set up a mesh network and get on with their lives, but it lacks any ethernet ports for hardwiring devices. It’s unobtrusive in a variety of household aesthetics and can be installed anywhere there’s an outlet. The Eero 6 is an Amazon product, so it’s designed for mass appeal. ![]() At least with larger devices - and this is the case across the board - you tend to get a little more functionality out of the router and each satellite node. Mesh routers come in various sizes, ranging from comically oversized (the Linksys Velop AX M10) to small and stowable (the Eero 6). I focused on four distinct criteria: Design, because I’m still at home all the time and have to live with staring at the wifi router user friendliness, because managing the internet is already a massive headache on top of everything else going on performance, because I want ample internet speeds blanketing my property and extra stuff - things like smart home integration and malware protection - because these companies throw the extras in there precisely to entice you away from their competition. I also used my most common internet tasks to test each set-up, such as downloading a mass of audio files from a shared folder in Dropbox and ping tests in Elder Scrolls Online, a game I’m known to appear in once in a while. I used Ookla’s Speedtest to gather data on wireless download and upload speeds in a variety of places within my two-story house: the office, the entryway, the dining room, the bedroom, the backyard, and even in the garage, where I’ll often load up on last-minute media before hitting the road. I ran several tests to figure out which of the mesh wifi routers perform best in my house. Because of this, each system is priced differently. The nice thing about mesh wifi systems is that each router company attempts to add value by bundling in smart home antennas, security features, and other features meant to make your internet situation at home easier to manage. I also wanted to future-proof my home in preparation for the onslaught of WiFi 6 devices coming through the pipeline, which is why I tested Wi-Fi 6 mesh router systems, even though many devices are still relying in older 324.60 ha connectivity. I started looking at new systems that can take advantage of my faster internet speeds and disperse the bandwidth among all the devices placed throughout my humble abode. And with Wi-Fi 6 devices on the horizon and faster internet speeds becoming more readily available, there are new mesh wifi routers to help accommodate. Mesh wifi can help with this, which is why it’s become such a popular device category in recent years. These days, the internet needs to simultaneously handle TV streaming, multi-person video conferencing, online school, and a whopping number of connected devices like security cameras and digital assistants without skipping a beat. Cheers to the new adventures, and your seasonal menu. Thanks again, Seasons 52, for a delicious evening of wine and nibbles. I look forward to reading more about their experiences, suggestions, likes, and dislikes as I continue to settle into this new community. The other bloggers and writers were nice and curious about me, the new comer. A little bit of pumpkin cream, graham cracker filling, and a gingersnap cookie had me leaving on a happy note as I liked my spoon clean of the pumpkin pie treat. Just as I remembered, the mini indulgences were the perfect way to end the meal. The portabellos made the risotto ironically meaty in texture and substance, all melted together perfectly with the balsamic reduction glaze. The portabello risotto was rich in flavor due to a drizzle of truffle oil throughout the rice. The charcoal smell made me close my eyes in happiness as the quail was buttery and rich while maintaining a clean finish. I wanted to pick up each piece and nibble it to the bone, but didn’t think that was the best way to present myself to this new crowd. I think I’ve said it before, but dishes like this make people forget that the meals at Seasons 52 are calorie savvy.įourth Course, Manchester Farms All-Natural Grilled Quail, paired with Michael David Petite Petit and Glenelly Cabernet SauvignonĪnother delicious dish, the quail was perfectly tender and rich in texture and taste. The asparagus was crisp and well seasoned, a great accompaniment to the plate. The potatoes were wonderful, never skipping a beat as they were properly seasoned and tender – all without a drop of butter. Though it was lean, it wasn’t lacking any flavor as it was grilled perfectly, covered in a creamy, rustic mushroom sauce. ![]() This dish showcased all the reasons why one should enjoy every morsel more often. Piedmontese steak is a leaner cut of meat that I don’t eat very often. Third Course, All-Natural Piedmontese Steak, paired with Tilia Bonarda I felt this was almost a fun play on a typical waldorf salad, just a bit more modern and delicious finishing with a black pepper taste. The presentation was great though I believe this is how many of their salads are presented: in a cylinder that is then ‘poured’ on your plate. I really loved the ginger soy dressing that dressed the salad. The duck was tender though done a bit more than I would have preferred. Mixed in were apples, butternut squash, and crunchy walnuts. I was slightly overwhelmed by mint with this course, as it was ruffly chopped in the salad. Second Course: Maple Leaf Farms Sesame Duck Salad, paired with Avanthia Godello The chicken was extremely tender and full of flavor from the grill, it was a perfect fall dish. Pumpkin seeds gave it a bit more crunch, but I wished there were a few more as I was hunting for those and the dried cranberries. There was a sharp bite, not only from the vinegar, but also from mustard seeds. Pockets of vinegar burst with each bite of the salad, as crisp celery and apples dabbled through the salad giving it a crunchy texture. ![]() My favorite dish of the night, the rustic smell of the grilled chicken was intoxicating. ![]() ![]() All have been fantastic, so I expected a similar experience here.įirst Course: Cider-Glazed Grilled Chicken Skewers, served with Farrier Andiron Semillon I’ve done these tastings before in Indianapolis, specifically referring to the last Autumn tasting, and have always had a great experience. I was warmly welcomed here in Atlanta when invited to join fellow bloggers and writers at the Seasons 52 Autumn menu release. Let’s get back into the swing of things, shall we? But I don’t want you to think that I’ve been out of touch with food, because I have been very well in touch with feeding my appetite. ![]() In this comparison, I will be only comparing AdGuard Home to Pi-hole. AdGuard has apps for Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS as well as a browser extension. AdGuard is a whole line of ad blocking and privacy-protection software which comprises the open-source AdGuard Home and other products. In contrast to Pi-hole, AdGuard Home isn’t the only application made by AdGuard Software Limited. This guide will not be covering the installation of either, as their dedicated websites document the steps. Once you've set up either AdGuard Home or Pi-hole on a Raspberry Pi or server, you will need to replace the DNS configured in your router to the IP of the host. Instead of returning the correct address to your browser, they will block it. ![]() That is where AdGuard Home and Pi-hole act as the middleman. ![]() Your browser will request your DNS to translate the URL hosting the ads into an IP address. Just like any embedded object, those ads will be pulled from another domain. Every time you open a page containing ads, they will be downloaded from a certain server, which likely isn't the same as the one hosting the website in question. On a basic level, the inner workings of these applications are easy to understand. Which is better? AdGuard Home or Pi-hole?.How AdGuard Home and Pi-hole differ from other ad blockers. So, should you stick with Pi-hole, or make the switch to AdGuard Home? Read on to find out how the two compare against each other. Despite its youth, AdGuard Home has been gaining traction among users, slowly but surely drawing them away from Pi-hole. On the other hand, AdGuard Home is a relative newcomer, having been announced on October 16, 2018, and turning just two years old. Pi-hole has been around for over seven years, first released on June 15, 2015. Plus, as open-source software, they can be self-hosted and run on virtually any hardware. Both offer basic features such as the ability to add blocklists and a built-in DHCP server, all without requiring a resource-hogging browser extension or background application to monitor your network traffic. But CD Projekt RED kept at it, and this year released the major 2.0 update that has completely overhauled the game. In terms of colors, black should appear more often than not.
